AI defines a Seed Library as ‘a free, community-based program where people can “borrow” open-pollinated and heirloom vegetable, flower, and herb seeds in the spring, grow them, and then harvest and return new seeds back to the collection at the end of the season.’
Not bad, for a start, (staying clear of any discussions of GMO, or organic growing), but how does this work on Galiano?
Following the example of many N. American public libraries, the Galiano Community Library houses the Seed Library of Galiano, and last year, a permanent seed lending display was established. It’s standing over by the windows overlooking the sun deck, proudly crowned by the SLOG logo.
The display has 4 sides, two of which offer seed related information and two that offer packets of seeds. One side is a continuous Community Seed Swap! Any s
eeds you don’t need can be left here for others to pick up. The other side is for SLOG seeds, most of which have been ‘borrowed’, grown out and collected in Galiano gardens, thus acquiring a degree of adaptation to our environment.
The SLOG seeds offered will be rotated seasonally, and ‘borrowers’ are encouraged to return a small portion of the seeds they grow out to the SLOG Returns slots on the display.
Please clearly mark all seed packets, both for the Swap, and for SLOG!
Everyone can be a ‘borrower’ (and therefore a grower!).
There is a suggested borrowing limit of 5 seed packets per season.
Access to a SLOG membership and to our full Inventory will remain available at Seed Intake (Fall) and Seed Lending (Spring) and other community events throughout the year.
